Understanding Vectors in Physics
Vectors are the mathematical language of physics. Any quantity that has both magnitude and direction — force, velocity, acceleration, displacement — is a vector. Breaking vectors into perpendicular components (x and y) transforms complex directional problems into simple algebra. A 200 N force at 45° becomes two manageable components: 141.4 N horizontally and 141.4 N vertically.
Vector addition is the key operation in physics. Whether you're finding the net force on an object, the resultant velocity of a boat crossing a river, or the total displacement of a multi-leg journey, the process is the same: resolve each vector into components, add all x-components together, add all y-components together, then recombine. The magnitude of the resultant is found with the Pythagorean theorem, and the direction with the arctangent function.
